Special report:
Florida abortionist sentenced to prison, charged with malpractice

Notorious abortionist James Scott Pendergraft, 43, was sentenced to three years and 10 months in prison on May 24, after being convicted in federal court in Ocala, Florida on charges of conspiracy to commit extortion, lying under oath and mail fraud. Pendergraft's request to remain free on bond pending his appeal has been denied, but he will not be imprisoned until he is directed to turn himself in. Pendergraft insists that all of his five abortion centers will remain open during his time of imprisonment.

This page documents news reports which were posted throughout Pendergraft's trial, and we will try to continue keeping you up to date on his appeal and any further developments regarding how this will impact his abortion businesses. (Some breaking stories we haven't posted here yet should be on the news feed on our main news page.)

On February 13, 2001, a new malpractice suit was filed against Pendergraft for perforating a woman's uterus during an abortion. We also hope to update this page as further developments on this new lawsuit become available.

We are also trying to provide you with insights from some of the pro-life missionaries who minister to women targeted by Pendergraft for abortions. (If you are one of these Florida missionaries, please send us a message.)

According to a 1998 St. Petersburg Times article, Pendergraft had committed an estimated 15,000 abortions, and he had a staff of 40, including five other "doctors." He owns abortion chambers in Orlando, Ocala, Tampa and Fort Lauderdale.

If true justice were being served, Pendergraft would have been tried and convicted of conspiracy to commit abortion. Nevertheless, the outcome of this case has the potential to stop this killer of thousands of precious children from continuing his grisly trade (at least temporarily).
